TRUST project – Tackling Under-Reporting and Under-Recording of Hate Speech and Hate Crimes Against Muslim Women, – financed by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers within the CERV Programme, aims to tackle the problem of under-reporting and under-recording of hate speech and hate crimes that occur in Italy against Muslim women, one of the categories most affected by episodes of intolerance, racism and xenophobia.
According to recent studies, 65% of Muslims living in Italy have been victims of violence, discrimination or prejudice; a 2019 Pew Research Centre survey stated that 57% of Italians would not accept a Muslim person as a member of their family, while 35% would not want a Muslim person as a neighbour.
Under-reporting is the phenomenon whereby victims of and witnesses to hate crimes tend, for different and complex reasons, not to report. Under-recording is the phenomenon whereby the police sometimes do not recognise the discriminatory matrix of hate crimes and the reported crime and, consequently, do not record or investigate it as such. The planned activities also aim to raise awareness among Muslim women who have suffered hate crimes to perceive themselves as victims of illegal actions and train representatives of the above categories so that they acquire the necessary skills.
