Monitoring homophobic contents in Italy

The report examines the surge in homophobic sentiments during PRIDE Parades in Italy. By analyzing the prevalence and nature of such expressions, we aim to understand challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community and propose strategies to counter rising hate speech. This snapshot explores the intersection between inclusive events and the alarming increase in discriminatory rhetoric.

Pride Parade Hate Wave – Monitoring homophobic contents in Italy is the ninth report drafted by Dr. Maryna Manchenko of CESIE – European Centre of Studies and Initiatives for the STAND-UP pilot phase (Grant Agreement no. 101049532).

The present report is a result of a mix of resources, both the manual monitoring conducted by CESIE and the use of the OSINT software.

Maryna Manchenko

Katerina Charokopou is a PhD Legal Officer in the Greek National Commission for Human Rights, specialized in public international law and human rights. Before joining the GNCHR she has served as Rapporteur in the Ministry for Migration Policy. She has over 20 years’ experience in representing Greece in and collaborating with international, regional Organisations (Council of Europe, UN, OSCE, OECD, ILO etc) and the EU via drafting of annual reports, completing surveys and country questionnaires and participating in Legal Working Groups, Working Parties and seminars. She is since June 2022, co-chair in the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI) Economic, Social and Cultural Working Group. Her main professional interest is the protection of the human rights of vulnerable groups including women, children, migrants, disabled persons, Roma, LGBTIQ+ people with focus on the fight against racism, hate crime hate speech.
